What to say in 30 seconds

"Hello, I'm a constituent from [your town]. Senate Democrats are about to pick a leader. I'm asking Senator [name] to vote only for a leader who commits, in public, to stripping the integration section from the NDAA and to opposing a new MOU. Will the senator tell me whether that is a condition for their vote?"

04

Likely pushback and answers

  • "The ballot is secret." The ask is the condition, not the ballot. A senator can say what they will require of a leader without saying how they voted.
  • "There is no candidate to choose between yet." That is why now: the condition is put to whoever runs. Ask the senator to put it to every candidate, including the incumbent.
  • "Leadership is about much more than one section." Agreed; this is one commitment asked of every candidate, not a litmus test on the rest.
  • "Why only Democrats?" Only Democratic senators vote in this caucus, so a Republican senator is not a target for this goal.

05

What counts as a win

Your senator tells you or your office, or says publicly, that they will apply the condition. Bigger: a candidate adopts the commitment, or the elected leader makes it. Report the answer you got; positions are recorded from reports, with a source.
